A lot of people make plenty of excuses not to choose green domestic cleaners: they’re expensive, they’re no different from the other cleaners, natural cleaning products don’t work.

Perhaps it’s time to provide you with strong facts, hoping they’ll jolt you to the reality that chemical agents are damaging:

You deserve to have a safe home.

Just because you’re living in a Stepford Wives neighbourhood where everybody is dandy and friendly doesn’t mean you’re already completely safe. Do you know that indoor air is up to 5 times dirtier than outdoor air? Yes, it’s just like there are thousands of gas-emitting trucks passing inside your home every day. One of the leading causes of bad indoor air quality is VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emitted by solvents such as paint and cleaning agents.

Your body could have more than 200 different types of chemicals.

You’ve read that right: out of the 70,000-plus recognised chemicals in the world, an average person can have more than 200 of them. Worse, more than 50 of these are classified as carcinogens, making you more prone to several kinds of cancers.

But you can counter this and decrease your chances of developing the dreaded disease. The Environmental Working Group of Canada suggests cleaning using the basics: soap and water.

Standard cleaners aren’t effective as you’d like to think.

Let us be clear: we’re not saying natural cleaning agents work wonders (though hundreds of thousands can already attest to that). What we’re trying to point out is that conventional cleaning agents don’t necessarily keep their promise. Based on a study conducted among 240 homes in Canada, there’s hardly any difference in terms of microbes killed between non-disinfectant and disinfectant cleaners.

Your children have to be safe.

You can always blame the kid for being so touchy—we don’t agree with this one, by the way—but the bottom line is once they ingested any of these harmful chemicals, they’re bound to get really sick. Over 5 million of kids, majority of which below 6 years old, become victims of accidental poisonings each year.

People are just not safe.

During an indoor air conference in 1990, it was revealed that more work-at-home moms die than those who work in the office. Yet what was even more surprising was the cause: over the last 15 years, they found out their deaths were highly triggered by long-term exposure to chemicals found in household products.

You don’t know everything.

If you think that all the ingredients of the product are listed on the label, then you’re dead wrong. In fact, only 1 percent of the total number are meant for the public to see. The rest are kept hidden, ambiguously labelled as “trade secrets.”

There may come a time when fish are history.

As long as you continue to patronise chemical-based cleaning products, the idea that fish may become extinct will no longer be far-fetched. In 2009, UK scientists discovered that fish were having a hard time reproducing, no thanks to the disruption of their hormones because of a huge amount of ingested chemicals, including those from cleaning products.
